Andover RFC Under 11’s welcomes children that are in school year 6 (born 2005-06). The game-play continues to coach & develop ball skills of passing, receiving and moving with the ball, but also inclusive player movement without the ball to support. The U10’s season builds upon, and consolidates on the previous seasons learning and experience of the introduction of contact (tackling & being tackled), with the U10 year seeing the introduction of rucking and mini-mauls. In this age group and consistent with the New Rules of Play (NRoP) for age appropriate rugby, the ruck and maul situations are conditioned to ensure learning and development meets every players’ needs, and of course that it is safe.
As players move through the age phases and team play becomes more important, equal attention is given to defensive play as it is to attacking. Much of the practice and training is based upon Game sense and small-sided games, which permits for more player-centered learning and development and creative play.
As with all other ARFC age groups, we play in festivals at many other clubs during the course of the season, and also train as guests at other clubs in the south and also host visiting clubs to train at Andover.
The team manager is Team Manager, who handles all the admin (and there is plenty of that!) provides the point-of-contact for players, parents and officials at training and on match days, whilst liaising through ARFC with clubs on many aspects including fixtures.
These people are all volunteers, noting that; ‘Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.’
Then also, Andover RFC U11’s share the resources and personnel of coaches and players from within the club, and also development staff from The RFU to enrich coaching and learning.
The age group training is scheduled for Sunday mornings (10.00am-12.00midday) during the season, and all are welcome to come along, have a look at what goes on and/or join in! (please consult ARFC website for news update and fixtures)
Following on from the previous week’s participation in the County Tournament, this week the Under-8 ‘A’ squad travelled to their Hampshire neighbours for the Winchester ‘A’ Festival. Despite the clocks going forward and heralding the move to British Summer Time (BST), Mother Nature had decided otherwise and the blustery and wet conditions were more akin to early November.
The competition saw the 10 teams split into two pools of 5 team with placed play-offs following the pool matches. Andover found themselves against New Milton, Winchester, Havant and a very impressive Jersey.
It was fantastic conditions for running rugby at Petersfield for the U-8 Tag Rugby County Tournament. With 24 teams from all over Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and The Channel Islands competing, the standard of play was always going to be high. Matches were being decided on not only wins, but also tries scored, so it was important keep the scoreboard ticking over and defend well.
Andover's pool had Fawley, Trojans, New Milton, Fordingbridge and Gosport & Fareham. Andover were scheduled to start off proceedings against Fawley, however Fawley decided on not turning up and as a result we had a bye in the first match. The down side to this was that all of the remaining teams managed to get their first game under their belt and we would be going into the second round of matches in this group a little cold.
There has been a great turnout for the Under 6s this season and it has been really good seeing all the children attend whatever the weather!
The children are really enjoying their time on the pitch and learning about teamwork but more importantly having FUN being taught the skills of tag rugby.
In this age group as we are still learning, we do not have matches but every Sunday at 10:00am to 11:00am we undertake training session.
It is not to late to join the Under 6's team please contact one of the Team Managers or Coaches as you will be more the welcome!
