The Andover u13 team kicked off their Hampshire RFU u13 cup campaign with a hard-fought 27-26 home win against an imposing and physical Eastleigh u13 side.
The game was played in sunny, mild conditions suited to our strong passing and running game, and despite falling behind in the second minute Andover hit back with 2 fantastic tries to take the lead. Poor tackling and a lack of authority at the breakdown allowed Eastleigh back into the game, and the visitors led 19-17 at half time.
Shortly after the re-start Andover took a three point lead from a well-worked try, however further lapses in defence allowed Eastleigh to re-take the lead with a converted try going into the final quarter. The last 10 minutes of the game were tense, and a try scored in the corner in the final few minutes was just reward for the hard-working Andover team.
Although Andover were out muscled in the rucks, and despite poor defensive work at times, the team showed a lot of character and belief to win the match. There were also some outstanding individual efforts on attack and defence, and the experience the boys gained from this fixture will stand them in good stead in the future.
A special thanks to those who supported the team, and those squad members who didn’t get a chance to play.
The Andover try-scorers were:
Charlie Deavall
Jake Williams
