The future looks Bright for Andover Under 10’s
UK Web Media Andover Under 10’s turned in a terrific performance last Sunday to win the Plate at the annual Winchester emerging players tournament.
The tournament is for new and developing players and showed the progress being made at Andover, as it was hard to tell this team from the one that did so well at Salisbury several weeks ago, despite not a single player appearing in both.
Andover began with a solid 2 1 win over New Milton which could have been more but for two disallowed tries.
Next up were a powerful Portsmouth side that destroyed all other opposition on the day. Andover had none of it however and matched them everywhere losing a dramatic game 1 0 to a late, late try.
Andover showed real character to pick themselves straight up and Winchester 2nd paid the price as Andover scored six unanswered tries.
In the last group game a dangerous Alton side were blown away by some very committed rugby and Andover again triumphed this time 4 1.
In the final Andover faced Winchester and as with their second team, the hosts were never allowed to get a foothold in the game. Andover got at them from the start with some committed tackling and great movement of the ball. Eventually Winchester crumbled and Andover ran out 5 0 winners to deservedly lift the trophy.
Skipper Michael Hayman led the team superbly and Max Peck, Freddie Bell, Daniel Gregory, Jasper Bullard, William Gent and Henry Davis all performed well, but it was perhaps the new players who really caused a stir.
For boys who have only just started their careers, Sam Wilde, James Rennie, James Sandford, Phillip Bennett, Oliver Rudd and William McHardy all looked completely at home and never took a backward step.
