Andover Colts 56 - Portsmouth Colts 8
After a scruffy display last time out Basepoint Business Centre sponsored Andover tidied up their game and romped to a ten try victory against Portsmouth in this friendly fixture. The improved movement and distribution was clearly apparent with wing Julian De La Cruz scoring four tries and Sam Sears out on the other wing also getting his name on the score sheet. De La Cruz was first to touch down and after a period of pressure from the visitors, Ioan Gwynne-Davies jinked his way to the line from 60m out for the second score. De La Cruz was back for more with two scores finishing off a particularly fine passing move for his second try. Charlie Deavall added a fifth try duly converted by third choice kicker JJ Thomas.
The backs were providing the gloss but the forwards continued to offer the grunt ably demonstrated by James Reader who completed two carries to set up De La Cruz for his fourth try early in the second half. Portsmouth were a credit to their coaching team and didn’t let their heads drop and were rewarded when they scored from a lineout drive. The comeback was short lived as Gwynne-Davies added his second try and Ben Reed dotted the ball down following pressure from Joe Joy behind the Portsmouth line. Jack Cooper barged his way through to score the ninth try before Sam Sears scored the tenth in the last play. Alas Callum Smith discovered that he must remain in the engine room and not in the 10 shirt by missing the conversion in front of the posts.
A great demonstration from the Andover colts of running rugby, an enjoyable, well refereed game and most importantly played in the right spirit by both sides.
