Portsmouth Colts 3 - Andover Colts 29
Like most good things it takes time for them to develop and flourish, playing for the first time Oakwood sponsored Andover Colts took a while to find their feet but put in a solid performance to overcome a spirited Portsmouth side. The opening ten minutes saw both sides looking to make an impression with the game played at break neck speed. Andover's early handling was sloppy and with other errors the hosts took a three point lead with a penalty. As the game progressed the pace dropped off and Andover enjoyed more of the territory opening their account with a try from Julian Dela Cruz in the corner. Ioan Gwynne-Davies adding the extras from the touch line.
The lead was extended when John Hair was first to react to a bouncing ball and touched down. A deft kick through by Lewis Reed, gathered by brother Ben extended the lead to 14 points at half time.
With players being rotated in the late summer sun Andover remained on the front foot and the defence held firm as the home side rallied early in the second half. The heat clearly affected some players, with a couple of them engaging in a little post Rio wrestling under the posts well away from play! In the last quarter Ben Reed added a second try after a clever chip from scrum half Joe Joy, the conversion was beautifully struck by Gwynne-Davies. To seal the victory Ryan Doyle broke through to score in the corner.
An encouraging team performance from Andover in their first league fixture of the season, providing a solid foundation to build on with league fixtures coming thick and fast in the first weeks of the new season.
